Product Description

1,4-Oxathiane (C4H8OS, MW 104.17) is a six-membered saturated ring in which an ether oxygen and a thioether sulfur sit opposite each other. It is a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid with a boiling point of 147 °C (755 mmHg), a melting point of -17 °C and a density of 1.114 g/mL at 25 °C, and it is slightly soluble in water.

The thioether sulfur is the main reactive site. It can be oxidized to the sulfoxide or sulfone with reagents such as sodium periodate or calcium hypochlorite, chlorinated at low temperature to give 3-chloro-1,4-oxathiane, and converted with halogens or alkylating agents into oxathianium salts. The ether oxygen can act as an O-donor ligand, which is how the compound has been used as an adduct in chemical vapor deposition.

Compared with 1,4-dioxane, which has no sulfur handle, and 1,4-dithiane, a solid with two sulfur atoms, 1,4-Oxathiane combines one ether and one thioether in a single liquid ring. This allows selective chemistry at sulfur while the oxygen remains intact, and the liquid form is convenient for metering in solution-phase work.

When sourcing, check GC purity, water content and related impurities such as 1,4-dithiane, a common by-product of manufacture. The material is a flammable liquid and an irritant, so packaging and transport must follow flammable-liquid requirements. The certificate of analysis and specification should be reviewed for each batch.
