Cyclic Olefin Monomers

5-Butylbicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene (BuNB)

CAS22094-81-1

5-Butyl-2-norbornene (BuNB, CAS 22094-81-1) is an alkyl-substituted bicyclic olefin used as a monomer and comonomer for polynorbornene synthesis. The strained norbornene double bond enables vinyl-addition and ring-opening metathesis polymerization, while the n-butyl side chain improves solubility and flexibility of the resulting polymers. KingPharm supplies 5-butyl-2-norbornene for research and production with a batch-specific certificate of analysis.

Product Description

5-Butyl-2-norbornene (5-butylbicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene, C11H18) is a norbornene ring carrying an n-butyl group at the 5-position. It is a hydrocarbon monomer belonging to the family of alkyl norbornenes used to build cyclic olefin polymers.

The ring strain of the bicyclic double bond makes BuNB reactive toward transition-metal catalysts. With palladium or nickel catalysts it undergoes vinyl-addition polymerization, giving a saturated, rigid backbone; with ruthenium metathesis catalysts it undergoes ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The endo/exo configuration of the substituent affects polymerization rate.

Compared with unsubstituted norbornene, whose vinyl-addition homopolymer is poorly soluble and brittle, incorporating BuNB adds a flexible alkyl side chain that improves solubility in common solvents and film-forming behavior. Compared with longer-chain analogs such as hexyl- or decyl-norbornene, the butyl group gives a smaller reduction in glass transition temperature, so it is often chosen to balance processability and thermal resistance.

For procurement, confirm purity by GC, the endo/exo isomer ratio, residual water and any stabilizer, since catalyst activity is sensitive to impurities. A batch-specific COA and specification help keep polymer molecular weight and composition reproducible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does 5-butyl-2-norbornene differ from norbornene?

The butyl side chain makes the resulting polymers more soluble and less brittle than unsubstituted polynorbornene, at the cost of a somewhat lower glass transition temperature.

Does the endo/exo ratio matter?

Yes. Exo isomers generally polymerize faster than endo isomers, so the isomer ratio should be checked when reproducing a polymerization recipe.

How should it be stored?

Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, well-ventilated place away from heat and ignition sources, preferably under inert gas to limit oxidation and moisture uptake.
