2-Aminodiphenylamine

CAS534-85-0

2-Aminodiphenylamine (N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine, CAS 534-85-0) is an aromatic ortho-diamine in which one amino group carries a phenyl substituent. Condensation with aldehydes or carboxylic acid derivatives gives 1-phenyl-substituted benzimidazoles in a single step, making it a common building block for heterocycles, dyes and organic electronic materials. KingPharm supplies 2-Aminodiphenylamine for research and production with a batch-specific certificate of analysis.

Product Description

2-Aminodiphenylamine (C12H12N2, MW 184.24; IUPAC name 2-N-phenylbenzene-1,2-diamine) is a crystalline aromatic diamine with a reported melting point of 77–80 °C. It is also known as N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine and is used as an intermediate in organic and pharmaceutical synthesis.

The two nitrogen atoms sit on adjacent ring carbons: one is a primary amine, the other a secondary diarylamine. With aldehydes, carboxylic acids or their equivalents, the pair closes into a benzimidazole ring, and the phenyl group ends up fixed on N-1. Reported methods include solvent-free, microwave-assisted condensation with aldehydes catalysed by Er(OTf)3.

Compared with unsubstituted o-phenylenediamine, it introduces the N-phenyl group before ring closure. This avoids a separate N-arylation step on the benzimidazole and the regioisomer mixtures that step can produce, which simplifies routes to 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles.

For purchasing, check assay and related-substance profile (in particular residual o-phenylenediamine and oxidation products), appearance and melting range. As an aromatic amine it darkens on exposure to air and light, so material should be stored in a dark place under inert atmosphere at room temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does 2-aminodiphenylamine differ from o-phenylenediamine?

It already carries a phenyl group on one nitrogen, so ring closure gives 1-phenylbenzimidazoles without a separate N-arylation step or regioisomer separation.

What should I check before using it in a cyclization?

Check assay and color; darkened material indicates oxidation, and residual o-phenylenediamine leads to N-unsubstituted benzimidazole by-products.

How should 2-aminodiphenylamine be stored?

Keep it in a tightly closed container in a dark place under inert atmosphere at room temperature.

What is the CAS number of 2-Aminodiphenylamine?

The CAS Registry Number of 2-Aminodiphenylamine is 534-85-0. 2-Aminodiphenylamine is also known as N-Phenyl-2-Benzenediamine; N-Phenyl-o-Phenylenediamine; o-Semidine.

What is the molecular formula and molecular weight of 2-Aminodiphenylamine?

The molecular formula of 2-Aminodiphenylamine is C12H12N2, and its molecular weight is 184.24 g/mol.

What is 2-Aminodiphenylamine used for?
