Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate
CAS7783-13-3
Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate (microcosmic salt, CAS 7783-13-3), NaNH4HPO4·4H2O, is an odorless crystalline inorganic phosphate that is freely soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol. It is the classic reagent for the microcosmic salt bead test used to identify metal ions, and it also serves as a combined sodium, ammonium and phosphate source in laboratory work. KingPharm supplies Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate with a batch-specific certificate of analysis.

Product Description
Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate (NaNH4HPO4·4H2O, MW 209.07) is the tetrahydrate of the double salt historically known as microcosmic salt. It forms odorless monoclinic crystals that dissolve readily in water and are practically insoluble in ethanol.
On heating, the salt melts in its water of crystallization, then loses water and ammonia and fuses into a clear sodium metaphosphate glass. This glass dissolves metal oxides and develops characteristic colors in oxidizing and reducing flames, which is the basis of the microcosmic salt bead test. In water it gives a mildly alkaline solution.
Compared with borax in bead tests, the phosphate bead offers a complementary set of color responses, so the two are often used together for qualitative analysis. As a single crystalline compound it also delivers sodium, ammonium and phosphate in a fixed ratio, which simplifies weighing compared with mixing separate salts.
For purchasing, confirm the hydrate form (tetrahydrate, CAS 7783-13-3), assay, and limits for heavy metals and other impurities against the intended analytical use. Because the crystals melt at a low temperature, check storage and transport conditions. KingPharm provides a batch-specific COA with each lot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does microcosmic salt compare with borax in bead tests?
Both form glassy beads that dissolve metal oxides, but the colors they develop differ for some metals, so running both tests gives more reliable identification.
Is the tetrahydrate interchangeable with the anhydrous salt?
Weigh the material according to the hydrate form; the tetrahydrate (MW 209.07) contains about one-third water by mass, so quantities must be adjusted when substituting.
How should it be stored?
Store tightly closed at +5 °C to +30 °C, away from heat, since the crystals melt at around 80 °C and can lose water and ammonia.
What is the CAS number of Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate?
The CAS Registry Number of Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate is 7783-13-3.
What is the molecular formula and molecular weight of Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate?
The molecular formula of Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate is NaH5NPO4.4H2O, and its molecular weight is 209.07 g/mol.
What is Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate used for?
Sodium Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate Tetrahydrate is used mainly in qualitative inorganic analysis and general laboratory work.
